Dancesport Competition: Give it a Chance

The thought of competition, in any context, doesn't sit quite right with some. The word has a negative connotation, and implies a kind of anxiety that they're rather not deal with. When it comes to dance, people view it as an art form, something they do for themselves to lift their spirits; the idea of ballroom competition seems directly at odds with the ability to enjoy dance for itself.

These concerns are of course valid - but we believe there is something to the idea of healthy competition. It can be inspiring, motivating, and take us places we never thought we'd get to.

Competition is not just for the most serious of dancers. People compete at every level and age, from beginner to champ and from child to senior. Many people - in fact, most amateurs - do it purely as a hobby. Some train every day; others put in just an hour or two a week. It all depends on your personal preference and where you want to take your dancing. At its core, dancing and competing should be fun - so while we encourage you to give it a shot, we remind you that it should always be enjoyable.

One of the marvelous things about competition is that it's not just about the end result; it's about the process and the experience. Working toward a concrete goal offers a unique sense of motivation: it helps you focus your practice, and creates a sense of excitement like none other. You visualize the "big picture" in a way that just practicing in itself won't necessarily cause you to do. You'll find that your instructor is invested in your preparation too - so, along with your partner, you'll feel a part of an overall team in a truly fulfilling way.

On competition day itself, there's no denying the spirit, style, and excitement of dancesport. Don a gorgeous costume, be cheered on by family, friends and peers, and just bask in the energy of the event. It's an unforgettable feeling, and brings with it a true sense of pride.
